A Man & His Cat by Umi Sakurai: a review

I haven’t ever delved into manga before, not for any particular reason, I just haven’t ever come across something that’s really caught my eye. That was until I came across this little treat.

A Man & His Cat by Umi Sakurai sees a young cat who seems like he’s never going to get bought from the pet shop as he’s deemed too ugly. No matter how low they make the price, nobody appears to want him. That’s until an older gentleman comes in, and they change each other’s lives forever.

I cried my way through this. Not for sad reasons, in fact, rather the opposite. Seeing Fukumaru (the cat) get all the love and affection he deserves, but never expected, just made my heart swell. Not to be dramatic, but I would lay down my life for this cat. He’s just such a good boy.

I can’t believe this little baby boy was ever called ugly when he was in the shop. That was the main reason he wasn’t bought from the store, and is also a comment made by a friend of Fukumaru’s owner, Kanda. He’s just the most perfect little handsome boy.

I’m 100% going to be reading this again, and when I was returning this to the library, I even found two more books in the series. Review for those coming soon, and that’ll probably be a double feature. If you want something cute and loveable, then the story of Kanda and Fukumaru is for you. This is available at Burnley Library if that’s local to you.
